                2 Reading - Erica’s After School Activities

              A. Read the passage below.

Hi! I’m Erica. I’m 14 years old and I’m from Canada. I’m an elementary
school student. My mother and my father are doctors. They work at the
same hospital. I have a brother. His name is Bob. He is 6 years old. My
parents send him to a daycare, because they work really hard. I love

Bob and I take care of him sometimes.
My school is in my neighborhood, so I am never late. I get up at 8 and
get dressed for school. We always have our breakfast together as a

family at 8:30. After school, I come home and do my homework. Then, I
hang out with my friends in the park. When I get back home, I have a
rest. On the weekends, I take violin lessons, and I visit my grandparents. I
like spending time with them. On Sundays, I help my parents. We do the
                 household chores together. It’s fun!

              B. Read the text below.

I’m Mark. I’m from England. I always have milk and an

After breakfast, my dad takes me to school. For lunch
and dinner I usually eat roast beef, smashed potatoes,

a sandwich, a hamburger or some Yorkshire pudding. I
like milk and orange juice very much. In the evening, I
have dinner together with my family. We have nice talks

during dinner. After dinner, we go for a walk together in

                                              the park in our neighborhood.

I’m Albert. I’m from France. For breakfast, I eat
croissants, a piece of baguette, jam, and cheese.

Croissants are really important in our culture. I love
fruit juice. I eat my lunch at school. We have very
delicious food in our school’s cafeteria. I sometimes
eat steak with mushrooms, soup, roasted chicken, and
some salad for lunch. I have dinner with my family in

the evening. It is really good and fun!

I’m Helena. I’m from Germany. I have breakfast with my
mother, because my father goes to work very early. I

cannot see him at breakfast, but I have breakfast with
my mother and father on the weekend. I usually eat a
toasted sandwich, jam, marmalade, honey, and eggs
and I drink milk for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I
often eat pork, beef steak, or a hamburger.

Hi! I’m Rachel. I live in Keston. Country
life is fantastic. It is more peaceful than
city life. Now, I’m sitting in our garden

and enjoying nature. There is a great
silence here. I know the city has many

facilities, but here we have a healthier
and less stressful life. I love Keston. I
go to the city center once a month to

have fun, but I don’t think I can live in
the city center. The countryside is less
polluted than the city. We also have

              good neighbors and relationships. The
people of the city don’t even know
              their neighbors.

2 Reading - What Does the Weather Do?

              A. Answer the questions below.

                 1. What kind of weather do you like?
                 2. Do you think weather conditions

                    affect us? How?

              B. Read the text.

                Do you think weather conditions

                affect your psychology? Some studies
claim: “Yes, they do.” How can the
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
                weather affect us? Scientists say:

“Weather affects the balance in our
                brains and causes some chemicals
such as serotonin to increase or
                decrease. Sunny and clean weather
                increases our energy, motivation

                and social relations.” People usually
feel depressed when the weather is
bad, cloudy or too rainy. They don’t

feel happy. When it is hot, sunny or
chilly, people have more energy to
                do something. For instance, people
                have winter depression in the

                northern countries. It is impossible

to remove the effects of weather
                conditions, but you can control
                them. According to scientists, you

                should have a balanced sleeping
pattern and do sports regularly to
                achieve this.

Ancient Rome was an incredible city. Thousands of people lived and worked
in the city – but there were some differences to how we live in cities in the
                  modern day.
For example, nowadays, the top floor of a block of apartments is often the
most expensive because of the views across the city. However, in ancient
room, wealthy families often lived on the second floor because on the higher

levels, the apartments didn’t have running water or toilets. However, similar
to many blocks of flats nowadays, the first floor was a shop.
People had different jobs: shop owners, fishermen, builders, farmers but
people only worked during the day, not at night. There were no lights in the
streets and after dark it could be very dangerous.

Just like in modern cities, there were restaurants in ancient Rome but it was
often poorer people who ate in these thermopolia because they didn’t
have a kitchen at home. There was a big difference between the rich and
poor. Rich people often had lots of slaves. Slaves would cook, clean, do
the shopping and sometimes, if you were very rich, you had a slave to take
                       off your shoes!

What are the similarities and differences between modern cities and ancient

                                                      My Last Vacation

Hi, I’m Robert. I’m 13 years old. I’m from the USA and I live in New York City.

My father is a computer engineer and my mother is a teacher. They work
really hard, so they always like holidays. Last week, we went on a vacation
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
together. We went to Miami. It was a great vacation. I enjoyed sunbathing
at the seaside with my brother, Alan. We stayed at a hotel. The hotel had
many facilities such as fitness rooms, swimming pools, a jacuzzi, a sauna, spa

massages, a big water park and sport courts. I played in the water park with
my brother every day. My father taught me how to swim better. My mother
and my father did sports every morning and enjoyed the fitness rooms of

the hotel. On the last day of our stay, we went sightseeing. We visited the
famous places of Miami. We saw Bal Harbour, Coconut Grove, Doral and The
Everglades. The weather was great during that week. It was sad to end our
vacation and go back to New York.

great time. Yesterday I took a tour to

were amazing! This morning I went to

                  B. Read the text and label the diagram.

There are volcanoes all around the world. Many of them are extinct –
this means they probably won’t erupt again. Scientists think there are
around 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth, but only about 50 of them

                      erupt each year.

The Earth is covered in rock called the crust and below the crust is
magma – this is very hot liquid rock. Sometimes the magma pushes

through when there’s space in the crust. It comes up though a vent and
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
shoots out of a volcano. Then the magma is called lava. Then, the lava
solidifies and this makes the cone of the volcano.

Lava from volcanoes is very dangerous, but the ash cloud is also a
problem for people who live near a volcano. Many people live near
volcanoes because the land is very good for growing plants. But when

there’s an eruption, dangerous gases can also be a problem for plants,
animals and the water these people drink.

                1. What are your parents’ occupations?

                2. What do you want to be in the future?

              B. Read the passage.

Hi! I’m Andre. I’m from the USA. I live in

Virginia. My work place is far away from my
home. I take the bus every day to work. I’m
a salesperson in a tech store. My job is really
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
tiring. I get up at 7 a.m and leave the house
                at 8 a.m. I start to work at 9.00 a.m. and finish

at 9.00 pm. I have my lunch at 12.00 p.m. We
have hundreds of customers every day. I sell
many technological products and it is difficult

to convince the customers about what to
buy. You should be patient and have good
communication skills. I also know the products,
and introduce them to customers. You should
know the prices of the products I can keep

many things in my mind. That’s the best part

store in Kansas, USA. It was about 11 p.m. The

supermarket had a lot of security equipment
and alarms. However, the thief was able to

smart phones. The jury gave him an alternative punishment. .
They didn’t put him in prison. His punishment was to visit all
